How you can help curb the overpopulation of feral cats

Never underestimate the power of volunteering! It is because of the kindness of others that the Milton Project can achieve its goal of controlling the overpopulation of feral cats in the Savannah region.

The Milton Project has an alliance with Coastal Pet Rescue—a non-profit, animal-rescue based organization in Savannah who has rescued over 600 pets since they were founded in 2003. Their mission is to save the lives of homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats in the Coastal Empire Savannah and Lowcountry South Carolina communities. And you can be part of this worthy cause by becoming a volunteer for the Milton Project!

Volunteers of the Milton Project help us by contributing their time to trap feral cats. Our volunteers are trained on how to humanely trap feral cats. When a feral cat problem is reported, our volunteers are sent to the location. They use humane traps with bait (mackerel) to lure the cats into the trap. The volunteers will then wait for the cats to walk into the trap then they take them to their home overnight until they can set up an appointment the next day with a veterinarian who can sterilize the cat.

Our volunteers then transport the feral cats to the veterinarian who will sedate the cat and perform the surgery. After the cat’s surgery, the veterinarian will tip the cat’s ear so that our volunteers know not to trap that cat again. The cat is sedated for this procedure as well and the vet will use special medical glue to seal the wound for a speedy recovery.

After this procedure, the cat will stay overnight for recovery. Our volunteers then transport the feral cats back to the place they were trapped for return into the wild. If you would like to help us with our trap, neuter and return program, please contact us today. You can volunteer one Saturday or Sunday a month or as much as you like.

As a volunteer for the Milton Project, you’ll help us transport cats to an animal hospital, house cats until they are fully recovered from surgery and return the cats to their colonies.

Please consider becoming a volunteer for the Milton Project!
